Sol du Mazel · Périgord Noir

Ten of you.
One pool.
One long weekend
in the Dordogne.

A 5-bedroom stone house and a 12-metre heated pool, all yours. Here's how a day runs.

07:00
The Sol du Mazel pool — clear heated water, sun loungers, afternoon light
Sol du Mazel stone façade at first light — roses climbing the wall, pool behind
07:00

Croissants from the village, 8 minutes away.

Saint-Pompont's boulangerie opens early. Someone always volunteers the first run — it becomes a ritual by day three. Back to the terrace before anyone else is up, coffee already on.

The kitchen is stocked the way you'd want it: proper coffee machine, two large fridges, everything already here. No supermarket dash on the first morning unless you want one.

Whoever wakes first gets the pool to themselves. It's worth setting an alarm for.

10:00

You're not stuck at the house. The Dordogne starts at the gate.

Yours.

The pool runs 28°C from May through September, twelve metres south-facing, fenced and private. No neighbours overlook it. It's where the day collapses into itself — long lunches on the loungers, a speaker propped on the table, someone always in the water.

Table for ten.
Bergerac rosé.
No one driving home.

Somebody bought the good wine at the Sarlat market this morning. The table's set under the abri, candles already lit. One group cooks; everyone else argues about what's going in the pool later.

The kitchen handles it all — two ovens, a six-burner hob, a BBQ outside, and a dishwasher that actually fits everything. Nobody's hand-washing anything on holiday.

Sol du Mazel pool at night — lit water, stars above, no light pollution
22:00

There's no light pollution out here.

Night swims are a given. The fire pit takes the edge off after the pool. Saint-Pompont is silent by ten — the only sounds are crickets and whoever went to bed first complaining about the noise.

When to come.

Best time for groups

June and early September are the sweet spot. The pool is warm, the Dordogne is green and full, Sarlat market is running, and the roads aren't jammed. You'll pay less than peak, and the evenings are long enough to justify staying outdoors until midnight.

How booking works

Saturday to Saturday is standard, but midweek changeovers and short breaks (minimum 3 nights) are possible outside peak season. A 30% deposit secures your dates; the balance is due 10 weeks before arrival. Drop us an enquiry and we'll confirm availability within 24 hours.

What guests say.

4.97 out of 5 · 50+ reviews

"Our party didn't include anyone under 18. Comfortable, clean, spacious, furnished and equipped to a very high standard. Plenty of loungers and hammocks to relax in. We enjoyed Sarlat on market day, and canoeing on the river was great fun. We had a wonderful holiday and would definitely love to return."

Blest Bakers, Tonbridge Adults-only group · Summer

"The pool for us alone was a luxury. The garden delighted us — we read and took naps in the shade at the top of the garden, in the abri. The feeling of space and tranquillity is truly rejuvenating."

J.M., Belgium Summer stay

"Très jolie propriété au calme. Nous avons passé un excellent séjour chez Katie et Andrew entre amis. Nous y reviendrons avec plaisir."

"A very pretty property. A great stay with friends. We'll come back with pleasure."

Amélie M. Friends' trip

"This was our second summer in Rose Barn. The house is in a perfect setting — light and airy, quiet, but near to St Pompont for those essential croissants. We look forward to another visit."

John N., Oaksey Returning guest · Second visit

"The cottage is well equipped — comfortable sofas, light upstairs, fans in every bedroom, a great separate shower and bath. The outside is a great space to chill. The pool is perfect."

Comestible, Lancaster Summer

"We went canoeing twice from Castelnaud — Bernard, who looks after the pool, recommended it. Monpazier on market day was fun, as was market day in Daglan, a beautiful little village close by."
